A stroke occurs during a shortage or absence of blood to the brain. Without adequate blood flow, the brain tissue suffers and brain cells begin to die.
Strokes come in two varieties:
•
Ischemic Stroke: Accounting for 90% of strokes, these occur when arteries leading to the brain are narrowed or blocked by a blood clot or other debris such as plaque.
•
Hemorrhagic Stroke: When a blood vessel in the brain leaks or bursts due to factors like high blood pressure or weak vessels, an individual will experience a hemorrhagic stroke.
Strokes require emergency medical attention, and need to be recognized quickly in order to be treated.
Symptoms of a stroke include:
• Sudden dizziness, stumbling, or loss of balance
• Confusion or trouble speaking
• Paralysis, weakness, or numbness on one side of the body
• Blurred, blackened, or doubled vision
• Sudden, severe headache
Sufferers of a stroke may experience devastating effects. Temporary or permanent complications may include:
• Paralysis
• Trouble talking or swallowing
• Memory loss
• Confusion
• Pain, numbness, or sensitivity to temperature changes
• Changes in personality
• Decreased ability to care for oneself
Age, sex, race, family history, and medical history can affect one’s chances of experiencing a stroke. However, a stroke is not discriminatory and can affect anyone at any time.
Celebrity stroke victims include:
Clarence Clemons (saxophonist, Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band)
Sharon Stone (actor)
Brett Michaels (musician, Poison)
Charlie Daniels (musician)
Elizabeth Taylor (actress)
