The Statue of Liberty will be closing for yearlong repairs beginning October 29, one day after its 125
th anniversary, announced Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, reports
NY Mag.
Lady Liberty will be undergoing a yearlong renovation project that will cost upwards of $27 million aimed at making the inside of the statue safer and more easily accessible to visitors.
Code-compliant stairways will be installed along with new elevators, upgraded restrooms, and updated electrical, mechanical, and fire-suppression systems.
Liberty Island will stay open to the public during the yearlong renovations, but tourists won’t be able to enter the statue’s crown, pedestal, or museum, even though the façade will remain construction free.
