By    |   Saturday, 30 May 2015 12:04 PM EDT

Hunting in South Carolina gets off to an early start in the spring, which is the beginning of hunting season for several species of birds and small game. As warmer temperatures tempt outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds back to nature, avid hunters can find plenty of opportunities for bagging their prey of choice. Depending on the species, you can hunt using archery, firearms or dogs.

According to the South Carolina Hunting and Fishing Guide, the following animals are open for hunting in South Carolina in the spring.

Turkey
In most hunting zones in South Carolina, turkey hunting season occurs in April. There’s a daily bag limit of two gobblers and a limit for the season of five. Some counties, however, have a seasonal bag limit of two. You may hunt on Sundays on private land, but not in wildlife management areas. In addition to a current South Carolina hunting license, you must also purchase a turkey tag. You may use shotguns, muzzleloaders, bows and crossbows, but may not hunt using dogs, bait, or electronic calling devices. In some wildlife management areas, turkey hunts are operated on a lottery basis, meaning you’ll have to apply to secure a spot at these events.

Quail
On private land, you may hunt quail using dogs beginning in early March and may bag 12 per day. You may hunt quail in all of the state’s game zones

Beginning in early March, you may hunt fox on private lands in all game zones using dogs only, with no daily bag limit.

Raccoon and Opossum
Hunting season for both animals using dogs begins in early March on private land in all game zones. Specific dates vary by hunting zone, but at most there is a bag limit of three raccoons per party per day and no limit on opossum. At game zones 3 and 6, there is no daily bag limit on either.
