Monday, 06 December 2010 09:29 AM EST

Shopping can be fun, but it can also spell trouble if done beyond a limit. A shopper who frequently crosses this limit is known as a shopaholic. Being a shopaholic, you not only burn a hole in your pocket, but may also face the risk of suffering from a full-fledged disorder if you are indulging in the compulsive shopping and buying of things that you do not need.

Here are some tips on what you should do if you are a shopaholic:
  • When you start noticing large credit card bills it may be time to check whether you are indulging in compulsive shopping. You may even be told by others that you are shopping too excessively. You should not laugh this off or take offence to these remarks. Rather, you should take them as a warning sign and start thinking carefuly about your shopping habits. Understanding the fact that you have become a shopaholic is often the first step to recovery.
  • Being a shopaholic means that you are buying things that may not be useful, or you are spending way beyond your budget. Your shopping addiction may also be a way to feel better or to divert your mind from other things. If this is the case, you should develop some other habits to keep you engaged or happy. At the same time, you should start following a strict budget for all your purchases and only go shopping when you have a list of specific things that you need.
  • The Internet has made it easier for many of us to become online shopaholics. With buying things becoming as easy as a mouse click, online shopaholics do not even need to spend time traveling to stores. However, online shopaholics face additional risks in the form of Internet banking scams and buying poor-quality goods. When shopping online, you must deal with only reputed retailers and adopt internet safety measures for your transactions.
