The Jewish holiday Shavu’ot begins on June 7th at sundown. The holiday, celebrated for one day in Israel and two days worldwide, memorializes God’s gift of the Torah to Moses at Mount Sinai.
In addition to the holiday’s historical significance, it also honors the first fruits harvested and delivered to the Temple in Jerusalem.
Shavu’ot is also known as Pentecost because it falls on the 50th day, but has no relation to the Christian holiday of the same name. During the holiday, work is not permitted and all night Torah study is encouraged.
Additionally, the book of Ruth, which tells the story of a Christian whose love of the Torah causes her to convert to Judaism, is read in religious services.
