An online petition emerged this week that urged the creators of Sesame Street to marry Bert and Ernie. The Sesame Workshop posted a message on its Facebook in response to the call, stating that Bert and Ernie are and will remain best friends, reports TMZ
“They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves,” the statement reads. “Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics . . . they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.”
