Septic Arthritis: Household Dangers That Can Cause Infection

By    |   Friday, 29 April 2016 06:24 PM EDT

Septic arthritis is an infection that causes one or more joints to become so inflamed and swollen that they are extremely painful and difficult to move. Some common household dangers can cause or contribute to septic arthritis.

The bacteria strains that cause septic arthritis, such as staphylococcus, streptococcus, and certain types of influenza, are commonly found in most homes. Those with weakened immune systems like infants, the elderly, and people with other types of arthritis are particularly susceptible to septic arthritis.

Injury that allows bacteria to enter the bloodstream is often the cause of septic arthritis. Scratching or puncturing injuries can cause this, particularly if a cat or other animal is the cause of the injury.

Most infections do not spread to the fluid around joints, which is typically sterile, but a bite or scratch near the joint can allow bacteria to enter these spaces, according to Lancet Infectious Diseases as cited by the University of South Florida College of Medicine.

WebMD states septic arthritis also can come from an infection following surgery on a joint, from a drug injection site, or in rare cases from a tick bite, though it probably won’t show up until months after the bite.

In most cases, septic arthritis symptoms include fever, weakness, severe pain in the affected joint, and warmth from increased blood flow, WebMD says.

Septic arthritis typically only impacts one joint, but in 10 to 19 percent of cases, multiple joints are affected, according to the Cleveland Clinic. This happens primarily when another type of chronic arthritis such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis is present.

Gout is another common joint condition that may dispose sufferers to multiple-joint septic arthritis, which can be debilitating.
