Retirement: What Position Does The Seniors Coalition Take on Medicaid?

By    |   Tuesday, 02 June 2015 04:19 PM EDT

The Seniors Coalition (TSC) is a public advocacy organization that aims to advocate for issues facing senior citizens in U.S. politics.

The nonprofit and non-partisan group provides a number of benefits and discounts to its members on services and insurance in addition to maintaining an Action Center in which the group launches petitions and advocacy campaigns for certain issues, including those involving Medicaid.

The group generally strives to protect Medicaid funds for Americans. The Million Petition Challenge is one of TSC’s largest policy campaigns. Introduced by TSC president, Dr. Joseph Bridges, the Million Petition Challenge has three main petitions that affect the future of Medicaid.

The first of these petitions supports the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) reform, which would allocate Social Security funding proportionately to the cost of living. COLA currently deprives seniors, according to a TSC press release, of $2,954 in social security funding, which includes Medicaid.

The TSC’s support of the COLA reform is indicative of their belief that protecting Medicaid funds is important, as the COLA reform assures Medicaid and social security funds are allocated justly.

TSC has also launched a petition to establish a lockbox on Social Security funds. A lockbox on funds would preserve funding for Medicaid, allowing the program to last over more generations.

The group’s Social Security Lockbox Petition, acknowledges the TSC’s hope to “strictly guarantee my Social Security benefits, and to protect Social Security for future generations.” This petition is the most popular among TSC members, with over 958.17K signers.

TSC believes that Social Security benefits and programs, such as Medicaid, are reserved only for American citizens. The organization’s third petition is to block illegal immigrants from receiving social security.

TSC’s recent advocacy efforts such as the Million petition challenge, show that TSC favors a Medicaid policy that fits into a responsible Social Security system.
