By    |   Thursday, 08 January 2015 07:06 PM EST

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has shown interest in running for president in 2016. Two years ago, he became the first governor in American history to survive a recall election.

Here are eight facts about his personal life that you might not know:

1. Walker was born on Nov. 2, 1967, to Llewellyn and Patricia Walker in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

2. The family later moved to Plainfield, Iowa, where Llew served as a church pastor. One day Scott noticed that the building where city meetings took place lacked a state flag. He canvassed his neighborhood, collecting money to buy a flag.

3. During high school, he worked part time washing dishes and cooking McDonald’s hamburgers.

4. The American Legion’s Badger Boys State Program selected Walker for membership in his junior year. He became one of two representatives from Wisconsin to attend Boys Nation in Washington, D.C., which taught him more about American government and freedom. “That really whetted my appetite for politics,” Walker told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about the D.C. trip. “It’s one of the few things I probably have in common with Bill Clinton.”

5. Younger brother David remembers that Scott got a speeding ticket when he was 17. To impress the judge, Scott wore David’s “Jump Rope For Heart” charitable event jacket. The judge, however, was blind. Scott received a warning, not a fine.

6. Walker never finished college. While attending Marquette University, he worked for IBM before leaving to work full time in financial development for the American Red Cross. No president since Harry Truman has lacked a college degree.

7. He met his wife during a karaoke night at Saz’s, a barbecue joint in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. A widow who was 12 years his senior, Tonette Walker wasn’t seeking a long-term relationship. The Walkers later returned to Saz’s to get engaged. Scott wrote her a note for his proposal. “Scott is very romantic,” she told Brava Magazine. “He tries not to let people know that.”
