In the afterglow of legalization of same-sex marriages in the United States and Ireland, eyes are drawn toward Israel as it begins to create a trend toward a similar end, and more groups are fighting for it.

The most recent elections demonstrate a shift in the direction of the legalization of gay marriage as anti-gay marriage comments from the Habayit Hayehudi party isolated voters, especially young ones, and the Likud party spoke in favor of a pro-LGBT agenda, Haaretz reported. President Benjamin Netanyahu along with other senior party members spoke against homophobia and promoted equal rights.

Here are five groups working to legalize same-sex marriage in the Jewish state.

1. The Association for Civil Rights in Israel
The ACRI has in the past worked to allow recognition of same-sex marriages occurring outside of Israel, spousal and medical benefits for couple of the same gender, protecting inheritance and adoption rights, and fighting against discrimination based on sexual orientation.

“The LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered) community still faces various forms of discrimination by government authorities and in the private sector,” the association’s website notes.

2. The Aguda
The Aguda is the National Association of LGBT in Israel. It’s a nonprofit, grassroots organizations aiming to promote the equality of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered individuals, according to A Wider Bridge. The organization provides legal help, therapy and social assistance to those faced with discrimination, and members also organization pride events and religious dinners. The organization serves Israelis, Arabs and Palestinians.

3. Bat-Kol
Bat-Kol is an Israeli lesbian organization that provides support for gay mothers, community for religious lesbians, and fights for the rights of the lesbian community through political activism. Prior to the first gay pride parade in Jerusalem in 2005, Bot-Kol appealed to the religious community to tolerate and accept the gay community, the organization’s website noted.

4. Israeli Gay Youth
IGY is an organization that helps to network young LGBT individuals and provide leadership and activist opportunities to fight oppression and allow their voices to be heard. Their education programs work to fight against stereotypes and the youth centers allows for a safe and fun place for young people to meet.

5. The Jerusalem Open House
JOH is a grassroots, activist organization that works to obtain the rights listed in its LGBTQ Bill of Rights, which include marriage. They host the Jerusalem Pride Parade every year to protest discrimination and inequality.

According to the organization’s bill of rights, “Many of the legal rights of same-sex couples today only exist due to ‘holes’ in Israeli laws. We demand a change in legislation that would allow gay couples to marry, divorce, register as parents, have the rights granted from ‘common law’ status, and much more.”
