Same-Sex Marriage in Israel: 3 Groups That Want It Banned

By    |   Thursday, 02 July 2015 08:30 PM EDT

While Israel recently ruled on measures allowing for more equality in the LGBT community, many groups remain in stark opposition to same-sex marriages.

Israel’s marriage proceedings differ from those in the United States because marriage is religious, providing distinct authorities for Jews, Muslims and Christians. The Chief Rabbinate, an orthodox Jews, stands in firm opposition to gay marriage, according to Slate.

Israel also bans most interfaith marriages, though secular couples may form civil unions. Currently, homosexuality is not permitted, but the government recognizes same-sex marriages formed in other nations for record purposes.

Those who are fighting to maintain the policy against same-sex marriage include the following.

1. Im Tirzu
This is an organization that works with students at universities to educate them on Zionism and is also involved in legislation related to issues concerning Zionism. Founder of the group Ronen Shoval told The Jerusalem Post he supports civil unions for gay people, but he believes marriage should retain its traditional meaning.

2. Mavoi Satum
This group works to provide personal assistance for women whose husbands have disappeared and who have been refused a Jewish divorce. They advocate for changes in the legal system governing marriage and divorce, but maintain that the traditional definition of marriage should be maintained, according to The Post.

3. Komemiyut
Lead by Bezalel Smotrich of the Zionist Habayit Hayehudi political party, Komemiyut is outspoken in its anti-gay beliefs. The group organized a Beast Parade in protest to a national gay Pride Parade. The marchers had goats and donkeys in Jerusalem’s Rose Garden, holding signs saying “Be shocked, Jerusalem” and “Stop the impurity,” according to Haaretz.

March leaders told Haaretz, “At least the animals committed no sin.”
