Sally Field: Roles She Missed That Other Actresses Made Famous

Sally Field, known for roles from "Gidget" and "The Flying Nun" to Forrest Gump's mama and Spider-Man's aunt, began her acting career in 1965 and since then has been a prominent player in Hollywood.

Field received her first Academy Award in 1979 for the movie "Norma Rae," but she didn't always get the roles she wanted.

1. Elaine Robinson, "The Graduate" (1967)
Field auditioned for the part of Elaine in "The Graduate," but the role was ultimately given to Katharine Ross. Ross was nominated for an Academy Award for her part in the film. She won a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer that year as well.

2. Loretta Castorini, "Moonstruck" (1987)
Cher was cast in the part in "Moonstruck" after Field turned it down. Cher won an Oscar for Best Actress in Leading Role and a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical.

3. Sophie, "Sophie's Choice" (1982)
Meryl Streep was cast in the lead, although Field was initially in the running for the part in "Sophie's Choice." Streep won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role and a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama.

4. Thelma, "Thelma & Louise" (1991)
While Geena Davis was cast in "Thelma & Louise," Director Ridley Scott was hoping to land Field to play the part. Davis was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role and nominated for a Golden Globe as well.

5. Mary Magdalene, "The Last Temptation of Christ" (1988)
Field was originally cast in the role in "The Last Temptation of Christ," but her impending pregnancy made the film impossible for her to continue. As a result, Barbara Hershey got the part.

6. Laura Victor, "No Small Affair" (1984)
Field was originally set to star in this film "No Small Affair," but Demi Moore ended up playing opposite Jon Cryer.
