'Roosevelts' on PBS: Twitter Reacts to Ken Burns Special

“The Roosevelts” on PBS, Ken Burns’ latest project, had a ratings high in September. Burns, an Academy and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, is known for his documentaries that chronicle famed Americans.

“The Roosevelts: An Intimate History” attracted more than 9 million viewers during the first segment of its 14-hour run. PBS averages a 1.48 prime time rating, and the Sept. 14 rating was 5.8.

Deadline reported the show garnered widespread buzz on Twitter.

During the original airing, the series ranked in the Daily Top 5 for Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings on Nielsen Social for series and specials on three out of the seven days, with 3.6 million Twitter TV Impressions. According to Nielsen Social, a TV audience is on average 50 times the number of authors tweeting. 

Before the documentary aired, PBS reported that Roosevelts-related posts trended on both Twitter and Facebook. A month after it aired, Twitter users are still tweeting about the documentary.

Burns told PBS he hopes interest in the project continues.

“Releasing a film is like having a conversation with your closest friends and family. I’m always struck by the thoughts and comments and how engaged the American people are," Burns said. 

Viewers were able to stream the 14-hour documentary through their local PBS stations websites and through PBS station branded digital platforms.
