Robert De Niro's Acting Credentials: Awards and Highlights of Storied Career

By    |   Tuesday, 31 March 2015 07:48 PM EDT

Decades have come and gone, but Robert De Niro's star has yet to fade. The actor is simply too talented, too popular, and enjoying himself too much to stop starring in movies.

The adoration of movie fans and the respect from filmmakers because of the quality of De Niro's work have given him a permanent place in the American conscience. And, the actor has been recognized with awards around the world for his efforts.

Let’s take a look at Robert De Niro’s acting awards and highlights of a storied career.

1. De Niro was awarded the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes in 2011. The Hollywood Foreign Press announced the honor and De Niro, then 67, was handed the award by Leonardo DiCaprio.

The award is given for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment,” and previous winners include Judy Garland, Dean Martin, Sean Connery, and Sidney Poitier.

2. De Niro won the Entertainment Icon Award from the Friars Club in 2014. It was only the fifth such award handed out in 110 years of the Friars Club, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

De Niro was roasted by celebrities such as Edward Norton and Joel McHale, but also lauded for his impact on the profession, and when it came time to accept the award, he gave tribute to Robin Williams, who had recently died.

3. The first major award for De Niro was the 1975 Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of Vito Corleone in “The Godfather: Part II.”

And the story behind that win, as The Daily Mail tells it, shows that sometimes failing in one quest can be a blessing in disguise. De Niro had auditioned to earn a role in the original “The Godfather” movie (Sonny Corleone) but lost out to James Caan.

He was passed up for that role, but cashed in on his opportunity the next time around.

4. De Niro, has been nominated for an Oscar seven times so far in his career.

Five of those nominations were for Best Actor, which yielded the actor one statue for his performance as Jake LaMotta in "Raging Bull."

His most recent Supporting Role nomination was for "Silver Linings Playbook."

5.
The American Film Institute awarded De Niro an AFI Life Achievement Award in 2003, citing his acting pedigree and his foray into directing films as well.

“By believing that anyone is capable of anything, De Niro has crafted some of the most fascinating, complex characters of all time. An artist at the top of his game, his performances are devoid of timidity. While the character may be unsure of exactly where he's headed, the actor playing him has no doubts,” wrote the AFI about De Niro’s style.
