Hunting in Rhode Island: 3 Animals To Hunt in the Summer

By    |   Saturday, 30 May 2015 08:59 AM EDT

During the summer, people flock to the great outdoors for everything from swimming to stargazing. Even though it’s not the primary hunting season in Rhode Island, summertime offers several opportunities for the hunting enthusiast, primarily in the latter part of the season. Though some of the large game is off-limits to allow their numbers to remain stable, plenty of other game animals can be found in abundance during the warm weather.

According to the Rhode Island Hunting and Trapping Regulation Guide, the following animals are legal to hunt in Rhode Island in the summer.

1. Deer (Archery)
Fall is the main hunting season for deer, but if you want to hunt using a bow and arrow, you may do so starting in mid-September in some areas. There’s also a youth hunting season in a few areas lasting two days. You may use a long bow, re-curve bow, compound bow, or crossbow. If you want to hunt with a crossbow, you must have completed a bow hunter education course or have previously obtained an archery deer permit.

2. Crow
Hunting season for crow begins in late summer, giving you a few weeks to bag this bird that’s considered a nuisance or pest by some, the state’s Division of Fish and Wildlife reported. Hunting hours for crow are a half-hour before sunrise to a half-hour after sunset, and there is no daily bag or possession limit.

3. Migratory Game Birds
Like the crow, several other game birds are legal to hunt in late summer. You may hunt the mourning dove starting in mid-September, with a bag limit of 12 and a possession limit of 36. You may hunt the king/clapper rail, Sora/Virginia rail, snipe, woodcock, and Canada goose beginning Sept. 1. You may bag one king/clapper rail and possess three. You may bag three of both Sora/Virginia rail and woodcock and possess nine. Snipe has a daily bag limit of five and possession limit of 19. The Canada goose has a bag limit of five and possession limit of 45.
