Sioux Falls
With a population of just over 167,000, Sioux Falls is just the right size for those looking to retire in a small city, according to TopRetirements.com. With more than 70 parks offering scenic walks and cycle ways for the active adult, there is some great, free outdoor activity available. Sioux Falls offers zero corporation tax with companies such as Citigroup headquartered there giving rise to a thriving economy with employment opportunities for the retired. The shopping area offers malls, streets of chic boutiques and some great restaurants. Real estate prices are averaging about $160,000 and the low state property tax make Sioux Falls an affordable option.

The state capital of South Dakota, Pierre is a small city with a population of less than 14,000 with many affordable activities on its doorstep. Situated on the Missouri River it offers a lot to retirees who wish to spend their time fishing or hunting, according to MarketWatch. The average house price is $146,500 below the state and country median. Hill City
This small town, with a population of less than 1,000, is a very busy place during the tourist season. Situated in the Black Hills, it is on the route for attractions such as Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and the Michelson Trail. There are some great arts festivals for the more artistic active adult with the August Moon Art Festival, the May Extravaganza and the Black Hills Film Festival offering plenty to see, MarketWatch noted. Median home prices are just under $180,000 and the cost of living very affordable for the retiree.
