Most Affordable Places for Retirees in South Carolina

By    |   Monday, 14 Dec 2015 06:42 PM

Home to beautiful beaches, warm weather, charming southern cities, and some excellent golf, South Carolina has long been a popular place for seniors to plan their retirement.

But not all parts of South Carolina are equal when it comes to good looks, low crime, and affordability. Some, like Hilton Head, while gorgeous, are far from inexpensive, with a cost of living index that's more than 30 percent above the national average, according to MarketWatch.com, while other towns are cheap but are unappealing from a quality of life perspective.

Here are three affordable places to retire in South Carolina that still offer a good quality of life.

1. Aiken
With a cost of living that is 12.3 perecent below average, Aiken is one of the most affordable and attractive places to retire in South Carolina. The median home costs just $90,000 in this small town in hill country near the Georgia line that is best known for its polo fields and steeplechase horse races. For retirees who aren't interested in equines, Aiken also offers good golfing and a mild climate.

2. Bluffton
Forbes in 2014 named Bluffton one of its best places to retire in the country, citing its location on a river bluff near the ocean, warm climate, walkability, and low crime rate as top reasons. The median home here costs about $197,000 and the cost of living is about 8 percent higher than the national average — still considerably lower than places like Hilton Head, although Bluffton is located very close to the popular resort island, making it easy to access for residents.

3. Beaufort
With a population of fewer than 13,000 people, Beaufort is another charming small town near the sea in South Carolina's Low Country. Located just north of Hilton Head and only 39 miles from Savannah, Georgia, it is the second oldest city in South Carolina. It is home to excellent golf courses and many of its buildings have been designated National Historic Landmarks.

"The historic downtown on Beaufort’s waterfront plays host to galleries and antique shops, and The Point, a dozen-block area of the city lined with historic homes, offers its own thriving arts scene," says TopRetirements.com.
