Retirement in Nebraska may not be the first thought that pops into the mind of the average person, but this state does have many wonderful towns and cities that are attractive and affordable.

When scouting out new territories to live, it is important to know that the perspective location is attractive and affordable while still having a lower than average unemployment rate, a healthy variety of services, and low cost-of-living ratio.
  1. Lincoln
 - Although the ultimate goal of many retirees is to not have to work at all, some find it nice to have a job that allows them to have a flexible schedule and some extra income. Lincoln ranks sixth on the Forbes list of 200 best places for business and careers. Lincoln boasts a city population of 268,738 residents, a median household income of $49,504, and a median home value of $142,200. One of the favorite local hot spots for entertainment is the Railyard Entertainment district which features a variety of dining establishments, taverns, an ice rink, and a performance area.
  2. Omaha
 - With a population of 434,353, Omaha is the largest city in Nebraska. The median household income is $46,978 and it is also helpful to note that the average cost of living is 12.8 percent below that of the national average which helps to make necessities like groceries cheaper to buy than in other cities.

  4. Valentine
 - Valentine has a lot to offer in the way of scenic beauty and outdoor recreation. The 200,000-acre expanse of public land includes lakes and the Niobrara National Scenic River which are ideal for fishing. Close to Valentine is the Prairie Club Golf Course which is listed by Golf's Best Digest as being one of the top venues for golfers in 2015. The population includes 2,747 people and the median cost of a home is $96,100. Retirement in Nebraska towns like Valentine are something that many people look forward to because of the quaint small-town atmosphere and friendly people.
  5. Kearney - 
Kearney is a wonderful place for a retiree to make their home if they enjoy leisure activities and friendly neighbors. According to MarketWatch, Kearney has a very active center for seniors, includes three golf courses, and hundreds of restaurants. Sperling's Best Places reports Kearney having a population of 30,932 in 2014 along with a $141,700 median home cost.
