Most Popular Spots in Maryland to Retire

By    |   Friday, 30 October 2015 04:46 PM EDT

Retirement in Maryland may be right for you if you want to spend your days close to the water. The state borders both the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, so there's plenty of waterfront to be had, whether you want secluded and quiet or beach boardwalk.

Here are three places that might be a great fit for your retirement in Maryland.

1. Annapolis
This colonial city greets many new retirees each year thanks to its proximity to Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, both only about 30 minutes away. It's also known for its healthcare, an important part of any retirement plan. If golfing is your game, Annapolis has eight courses that can suit the casual player to the scratch golfer. Great food options are also in abundance here since chefs and restaurant owners know that their residents can easily drive to the bigger cities if they don't entice their palates enough locally.

2. Ocean City
This beach town on Maryland's Eastern Shore is ready for those who want a beach vibe but still want to experience four seasons — or just plan to travel south for the winter. Sports fishermen will thrive here as well as golfers who want to be able to choose from 17 courses when their clubs start calling. It also has a perfect boardwalk for people-watching or going on a bike ride. You can also pop over to Assateague Island, famous for its wild ponies and lots of other wildlife enjoying the pristine habitat.

In Ocean City, there are lots of free, family-friendly events that take place throughout the summer, perfect for the grandkids' visit. Other activities include concerts and movies on the beach, light shows, and even family beach Olympics.

However, if the influx of tourists bothers you, consider Berlin, Maryland. It's only 15 minutes away from Ocean City, very historic, and is often a movie set for films, such as "Runaway Bride" and "Tuck Everlasting."

3. Salisbury
Outdoor adventures abound in and around Salisbury, since it's located right between the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay on the Delmarva Peninsula. Jump on the Chesapeake Wine Trail or just stop by Bordeleau Winery. Take part in the Third Friday events with shops, galleries and more open late for a great date night stroll and keep an eye out for festivals happening all year long. And the beach is only 30 minutes away.
