Georgia has been praised by a number of media outlets for its affordability and tax benefits. Kiplinger lists it among one of its top 10 most tax-friendly states. However, there are many things disabled seniors need to think about like public transportation and handicap offerings as well as affordability.

Disability Resources.org lists a number of offerings from advocacy and legal groups to resource guides and agencies that can help connect seniors with the services they need. In addition, there is the Friends of Disabled Adults and Children which is a statewide provider of home health care equipment, mobility aids and daily living devices.

There is also the Statewide Independent Living Council of Georgia, which is part of the independent living centers in Georgia. Every three years, the board members review their plan to comply with getting Title VII, Chapter 1 funding to help provide those in need with access to advocacy, housing, transportation and assistive technology. There are workshops, reports and updates to help those with disabilities connect with the people they need to throughout Georgia.

There is also the Office of Disability Services Ombudsman, which has the mission to promote the well-being and rights of disabled people throughout the state of Georgia. On the website, there are links to file disability service complains and find state agency resources as well as Georgia crisis and access lines. The office is located in Atlanta, and the contact information on the page is easy to find.

For those filing a disability claim in Georgia, the claim would go through the Disability Adjudication Services. This is the state agency that decides if an applicant is eligible for Supplemental Security income and Social Security disability. The Georgia Department of Human Resources handles the state’s Social Security income. The Disability Secrets website lists the contact information and office locations for both services for those that have or need to file for disability income.

Georgia also has a public transportation system that is available in the larger metropolitan areas, as well as some rural communities. PublicTransportation.org lists the different counties in Georgia that offer a public transportation system with links to the county transportation websites. One the websites includes bus routes, schedules,and cost. All the buses are ADA compliant.
