For those who devoted themselves to the service of their country, retirement should be a time to reflect with pride upon their accomplishments. What better place to reflect than the sunny beaches of Florida. Retirement in Florida is an appealing option to people from all walks of life, but it should be especially enticing for veterans because of the benefits that Florida provides.

  1. Property Tax Exemption- If you were honorably discharged from the armed forces due to a service-connected disability, you are exempt from all property tax in Florida. If your service-connected disability rates between 10 percent and 100 percent, you should expect your property tax to be discounted. As Florida does not tax pensions or income, a property tax exemption would further free up your money, leaving you with extra to spend on enjoying your retirement in Florida.
  2. Employment Assistance - Although picking up a new job may be the last thing on your mind as you start your retirement, it should be comforting to know that if you ever do wish to rejoin the workforce, Florida can help you do so. The "Employ Florida Vets" portal helps to connect you with employers who are actively seeking veteran employees.

  4. State Veterans Homes - Florida offers six veterans retirement homes for those who wish to spend their final years with their fellow servicemen. These homes offer assisted living or domiciliary care. While you cannot move to Florida and immediately enter one of these homes, by establishing domicile in Florida, when the time comes for you to need nursing care, you will be eligible, if you wish, to apply for entrance to one of these facilities.
  5. Military History Attractions - Florida offers an abundance of military history exhibits for you to enjoy. The Museum of Military History in Kissimmee houses artifacts from as far back as the Civil War. These interactive exhibits are designed to "pay tribute to those who served while preserving our history." The Armed Forces History Museum, located in Largo, off the Tampa coast, focuses on conflicts beginning at World War One up until the present day. This museum frequently hosts events to pay tribute to veterans and offer veterans discounted museum admission.
