Prostate Cancer Foundation Accomplishments and Treatment Advances

By    |   Friday, 13 May 2016 01:12 PM EDT

In recent years, the Prostate Cancer Foundation has led the way in clinical research leading to significant treatment accomplishments and advances.

Most recently, the Prostate Cancer Foundation reported the following accomplishments that have been made by scientists in six areas of prostate cancer research

1. Genetics — Scientists recently discovered an inherited mutation of a gene associated with prostate cancer risk. This discovery will help identify men who are at a higher risk, genetically, for developing prostate cancer.

2. Biomarkers — The discovery of a non-invasive highly specific urine test that detects prostate-specific antigens can help predict the presence of aggressive prostate cancer. This breakthrough may remove the need for painful and unnecessary biopsies and procedures.

3. Targeted Therapies — Medications that treat metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer have been approved by the FDA: Xtandi and Zytiga.

Other targeted therapy advancements include the discovery of why androgen-deprivation therapy and ionizing radiation are “synergistic in the treatment of prostate cancer patients,” the Prostate Cancer Foundation said.

Clinical trials are currently underway to test the effectiveness of combining two drugs: one that targets a cancer cell growth regulator and androgen deprivation therapy.

4. Exercise — Researchers are closer to understanding why regular exercise may increase survival rates of men with prostate cancer. One study has shown that regular brisk walking produces normally shaped blood vessels in prostate tumors, significantly lowering the risk of death from prostate cancer.

5. Nutrition — Studies have shown that an increased intake of vegetable fats reduced the risk of death from prostate cancer in men with non-metastatic prostate cancer. High amounts of animal fats and carbohydrates correlate to increased risk of disease progression.

6. Prevention — Statin drugs, normally prescribed to lower cholesterol, were found to greatly reduce the risk of developing metastatic and lethal cancers.

According to the American Cancer Society, additional treatment advances include using high-intensity focused ultrasound which heats and destroys cancer cells with ultrasonic beams, prostate cancer vaccines that will treat but not prevent cancer, and more precise and advanced radiation therapy.
