By    |   Tuesday, 03 May 2016 07:14 PM EDT

Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among men, and Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is the ideal time to learn more about the disease and help raise money for continued research that save lives.

According to Prostate Health Guide, September is officially designated as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and, in general, a month to raise awareness for all prostate health issues.

Each year, the president of the United States issues a proclamation recognizing the month and its intentions to help fund prostate cancer research and treatment as well as honor those who have been taken by the disease.

Prostate Health Guide further explains that prostate cancer is responsible for nearly 30,000 deaths in the U.S. annually.

The activities of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month are aimed at encouraging men to proactively discuss prostate cancer with their physicians and engage in early detection, a key to decreasing the death rate of this common cancer.

The official color of prostate cancer awareness is light blue, says the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Many types of merchandise is available to help promote Prostate Cancer Awareness Month including wristbands, key chains, apparel, and jewelry.

Similar to other cancer awareness activities, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is marked by activities such as themed run/walks in several cities around the country.

According to the Zero
, a nonprofit aimed at the eradication of prostate cancer, there have also been prostate cancer awareness golf tournaments and fundraising BBQs all focused on raising money to combat prostate cancer.

Advocacy organizations also plan many types of educational materials aimed at professionals and consumers.

For example, Zero describes educational brochures, webcasts featuring experts on prostate cancer, live Twitter chats, and educational workshops.

If you are concerned about prostate cancer yourself or have a loved one who is at risk, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month provides a perfect opportunity to learn more, begin a dialogue with your physician, or simply get involved in any of the activities aimed at benefitting this worthy cause.
