Alternative Remedies for Prostate Problems

By    |   Thursday, 07 April 2016 10:41 PM EDT

Many men will experience symptoms of enlarged prostate during their lives, and exploring some alternative remedies to this condition can help.

According to Healthline
, the prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system that secretes the fluid in semen that carries sperm out of the body during ejaculation. It is small but grows larger as men age.

If the prostate grows too large, a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate results. The growing prostate gland can put excess pressure on the urethra and make urination uncomfortable and even difficult.

Before you take prescription medications for enlarged prostate, experts agree that it is probably safe to try some alternative remedies, says WebMD.

Taking between 75 and 200 milligrams of sustainably harvested pygeum, or African plum extract, each day can make urination easier and reduce nighttime trips to the bathroom.

Rye grass pollen extract is another supplement that shows promise in improving urination difficulties of enlarged prostate. Experts recommend 126 milligrams three times daily.

Healthline also recommends the herbal supplement stinging nettle, which is used commonly in Europe to improve urine flow in men who suffer from BPH. It is most effective when used in combination with other supplements like pygeum.

Beta-sitosterols contain cholesterol-like substances found in a mixture of plants, and they are thought to improve urine flow.

A good diet can also be an alternative remedy for enlarged prostate. Dr. Andrew Weil recommends eating plenty of healthy fats and omega-3 fatty acids. He also points out that Asian men, who traditionally eat lots of whole soy foods, have a far lower risk of developing BPH.

Another alternative remedy that may provide some relief from enlarged prostate symptoms is prostate massage therapy, says Prostate.net.

Prostate massage has long been used in many cultures to increase a man’s sexual prowess, but it is gaining credibility in the medical field as a treatment for enlarged prostate. This treatment can be done either manually or with specially designed instruments intended to put gentle pressure on the prostate gland. It can help improve urination and possibly even shrink an enlarged prostate gland.
