The Prolaris Prostate Test: How Does It Work?

By    |   Wednesday, 17 February 2016 05:57 PM EST

Understanding the aggressiveness of each patient's prostate cancer can help formulate appropriate treatment plans. The Prolaris prostate test has become a leading method for assessing the risk of cancer progression.

CNN reported two studies were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine showing that many men with prostate cancer are either unnecessarily treated or treated in an overly aggressive way. These inappropriate treatments offer no benefit at best, and at worst, they can be harmful for patients. There are types of localized prostate cancer that do not cause harm when left untreated.

Getting a clear picture of each patient’s prostate cancer, understanding the aggressiveness, and prioritizing treatment methods is called risk stratification. Myriad Genetics says that its Prolaris prostate test is an effective tool for risk stratification. It analyzes the genes of the specific cancer and can accurately predict how aggressive the prostate cancer is.

Oncology Nurse Advisor explains, “Prolaris is a molecular diagnostic test that measures the level of RNA expression of genes involved in prostate tumor growth.” Low levels of RNA expression are typically associated with low-risk, nonaggressive forms of prostate cancer. The test can also identify patients who are most likely to die from their prostate cancer within 10 years.

Prostate cancer patients with less aggressive cancers may be candidates for active surveillance. With active surveillance, the prostate cancer is not actually treated. Instead, the patient is closely monitored through increased screening and other tests.

In addition, the Prolaris prostate test can be helpful for prostate cancer patients who have already been through treatment or had a prostatectomy, or surgery to remove all or part of the prostate gland. Myriad Genetics says the test can help to assess the likelihood of cancer recurrence so physicians can determine the appropriate level of monitoring.

The Prolaris prostate test has become an important tool for risk stratification, particularly when used in combination with other tests. It is designed to help improve outcomes and help patients with less aggressive prostate cancer avoid the side affects and expense of unnecessary or inappropriate treatment.
