How to Prevent Schizophrenia

Friday, 10 June 2011 03:38 PM EDT

There has been much debate on what causes schizophrenia and whether it is possible to prevent schizophrenia. A lot of biological, psychological, and social factors are associated with the onset of schizophrenia symptoms.

People with a family history of schizophrenia should take prior action for schizophrenia prevention. Reducing the risk of schizophrenia and preventing relapses are important in schizophrenia prevention. An unhealthy, stressful environment is what causes schizophrenia primarily, so it is advisable to adopt a healthy lifestyle before the problem occurs.

Especially during pregnancy, mothers should avoid smoking, tobacco, alcohol, and any drug abuse to prevent schizophrenia. Some other risk factors like prenatal infections, toxic exposure to lead, and head trauma during delivery can also potentially contribute to schizophrenia. It is better to check for prescription incompatibility in pregnancy and treat it.

During adolescence, avoiding drugs, unhealthy friendships, and getting treatment for anxiety and depression can be key to schizophrenia prevention. It is also advised to manage social stress with professional counseling, encourage social participation, get enough sleep, and start early treatment to minimize the effects of schizophrenia. These methods can also slow down the effects of schizophrenia. Many researchers indicate that the risk of developing schizophrenia is determined by genetic predisposition and environmental stress during pregnancy and early childhood.
