IBS, or irritable bowel syndrome, is the most common intestinal disease affecting almost 20% of the U.S. population.
Listed below are ways to both prevent irritable bowel syndrome and cope with IBS symptoms:
- Stay active and eat a healthy diet of small meals packed with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
- Restrict the intake of red meats, processed foods, sugary drinks, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol and tobacco; these foods can hinder the digestive processes and trigger IBS.
- Add extra fiber and gut-friendly probiotics to your diet by drinking vegetable juices or taking supplements.
- Cut down on consumption of beans and cruciferous vegetables, such as cabbage and broccoli, in order to relieve IBS gas-related issues.
- Maintain a food diary so that your body’s response to each food can be recorded and assessed for its effect on the overall IBS symptoms.
- Manage stress and get adequate rest.
