How to Prevent Crohn's Disease

Tuesday, 14 June 2011 03:54 PM EDT

Crohn’s disease, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, is a chronic disorder that cannot be definitively prevented or cured. Since the symptoms of Crohn’s disease appear as brief, acute flare-ups, it may be helpful to understand ways to prevent Crohn’s disease and reduce the severity of the associated symptoms.

Crohn’s Disease, also known as inflammatory bowel disease, prevention strategies can help to manage the symptoms and reduce the chances of
relapse.

How to Prevent Crohn’s Disease:

• Reduce stress on the digestive tract by having small, frequent meals. It is better to eat 5-6 small meals in a day than 2-3 large meals.
• Adopt a low fiber, but well-balanced diet. A diet high in fiber may irritate inflamed intestinal walls.
• Eat ripe bananas, apples, curd, and pureed vegetables since they help to maintain optimum intestinal flora.
• Eliminate wheat, wheat products, and lactose-containing foods from your diet. Though eliminating these foods does not directly ease the symptoms of Crohn’s disease, it will ease the symptoms of indigestion and bloating.
• Because stress can worsen the symptoms of Crohn’s disease, relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, and slow breathing may be helpful.
• Avoid stimulants like tobacco and caffeine, exercise regularly, maintain a positive attitude, and get sufficient sleep to help prevent Crohn’s disease.
