Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: Top Five Symptoms

Wednesday, 08 September 2010 09:33 AM EDT

Post-traumatic stress disorder occurs when a person is unable to deal with the trauma resulting from a stressful event. Physical and chemical changes in the brain can lead to the disorder.
Primary post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms are:
  • re-experiencing symptoms
  • flashbacks
  • panic attacks
  • withdrawal
  • insomnia
Symptoms differ from person to person, and can occur soon after the event or even years later. To be classified as PTSD, at least three of these symptoms must occur.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is treated with counseling as well as psychiatric medicines.

Other symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder are emotional withdrawal and inability to connect with people, loss of self-esteem, and depression. People suffering from traumatic stress disorder are unable to make long-term plans and believe that they will not live very long. However, with proper counseling and medication, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder can be alleviated, and the patient can gradually lead a normal life.
