Police officers and those aspiring to serve in that capacity can gain a lot of wisdom and knowledge from perusing through accounts of others’ experiences and lessons learned on the job.

One of the most useful and entertaining ways to gather this knowledge is to read the blogs of those who have gone before and wish to share the lessons they learned with those who would benefit from their experiences.

1. Cop in the Hood 
Peter Moskos, a Harvard and Princeton-educated former Baltimore City Police Officer and current associate professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, has written three critically acclaimed books, including Cop in the Hood: My Year Policing Baltimore’s Eastern District, about his experiences with violent crime and intense poverty.

2. Improving Police 
David C. Couper, former chief of police in Burnsville, Minnesota, became ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church after his 30+ years of police service.

He wrote a book, Arrested Development: A Veteran Police Chief Sounds Off About Protest, Racism, Corruption, and the Seven Necessary Steps to Improve Our Nation’s Police, in which he explores effective ways to improve the image and inner-workings of the police departments to restore a free society.

After a midlife crisis at 45, Suzie Ivy decided to lose weight and enter the police academy, thus becoming the first female officer in her rural Arizona town’s history. She also wrote a book, Bad Luck Cadet, in which she detailed the humorous and serious sides of her career.

4. Riding in the Squad with Christ 
This blogger spent 15 years as a detective in a Midwest police department and is working on getting a book published about his experiences. His blog covers various topics relating to life as a police officer and the integration of his faith in his work.

5. The Things Worth Believing In 
This blogger, a police lieutenant who was a former soldier and SWAT operator, offers practical and tactical advice for police officers on a variety of topics pertaining to codes of conduct, self-defense, weaponry, fitness, etc.
