How Does Planned Parenthood Define Revenue?

By    |   Tuesday, 20 October 2015 02:00 AM EDT

Planned Parenthood receives more revenue from the government than from any other source, the group’s 2013-2014 fiscal year annual report revealed.

Government health services grants and reimbursements make up 41 percent of the organization’s funding. The health care provider that gives contraception and abortions to minors and adults received $528.4 million last year from the government.

Obamacare helps Planned Parenthood obtain and maintain their government funding. In 2014, the Department of Health and Human Services said that the government gave Iowa and Montana Planned Parenthood affiliate centers over $500,000 in taxpayer grants so that they could assist clients in enrolling in Obamacare. The taxpayer grants were in addition to the previously awarded $655,000, said The Daily Signal.

An affiliate Planned Parenthood center in Minnesota also received a $160,000 Obamacare “assister” grant.

“I know how hard you worked to help us pass health care reform. You and your supporters got out there—you organized; you mobilized; you made your voices heard. It made all the difference,” President Barack Obama announced at Planned Parenthood’s fundraising gala in 2013, The Daily Signal reported.

Planned Parenthood’s 700 health centers performed 327,653 abortion procedures last year.

But the controversial group is still largely funded from other sources. About 30 percent of Planned Parenthood’s revenue comes from private contributions and bequests. Private donations allotted Plan Parenthood with $391.8 million last year. Some of the organization’s most well-known donors include Bloomberg L.P., The Container Store, the Museum of Modern Art, Twitter, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, according to Open Secrets.

Non-governmental health services revenue sums to $305.3 million and accounts for 23 percent of Planned Parenthood’s total revenue.

The remaining 6 percent of Planned Parenthood’s revenue comes from other operating revenue. The other category yielded $77.9 million in revenue in the 2013-2014 fiscal year.

The organization’s total revenue for the year amounted to $1.3 billion. Additionally, their excess revenue was $127.1 million and their end-of-the-year net assets totaled $1.4 billion.
