4 of Planned Parenthood's Biggest Donors

By    |   Tuesday, 20 October 2015 01:43 AM EDT

Planned Parenthood’s 700 health centers and 59 affiliate offices throughout the U.S. depend partly on donations for their success.

In 2014, the health care group that provides abortions and contraceptives to millions of Americans received $52.5 million in contributions and grants, according to the organization's most recent financial statement.

However, in 2012, Planned Parenthood turned down a $500,000 donation because of their “perception” of the willful donor. Tucker Max, author of several bestselling books about his own drunken adventures, tried to drive his half a million dollar donation three and a half hours to a Texas Planned Parenthood center that was in danger of shutting down. Rather than accept his money and help the center that lacks support in Texas, Planned Parenthood refused his donation because his humor “can be perceived in a negative manner,” reported Forbes.

“What? I thought Planned Parenthood’s mission was about helping women, not passing judgment on humor,” the author responded.

Still, Planned Parenthood deems most donors’ money in line with their mission. Below are four of Planned Parenthood’s biggest donors:

1. Bloomberg L.P.
The New York financial software, data, and media company donated $1.15 million to Planned Parenthood in 2014, according to Open Secrets. Much of the donation money went toward Planned Parenthood Global, which supports reproductive health care efforts in Nicaragua, Burkina Faso, Senegal, and Uganda, Planned Parenthood announced.

2. Mostyn Law Firm
The Texas Law Firm donated $750,000 to Planned Parenthood in 2014 and $200,000 in 2012, said Open Secrets. Steve Mostyn, the firm’s founding attorney, is known for his donations to Democratic candidates and organizations, according to The Center for Public Integrity.

3. Sol Goldman Investments
The New York real estate company, whose founder, Sol Goldman, once owned the New York Chrysler Building, donated $750,000 to Planned Parenthood in 2014, reported Open Secrets. The Goldman family has made numerous other donations to Democratic organizations and PACs, The Washington Free Beacon said.

4. Soros Fund Management
George Soros, the fund management company’s founder, opened a philanthropy organization, Open Society Foundations, in 1979 “ to take a stand on controversial issues.” Soros is known for his democratic political affiliation and accordingly gave Planned Parenthood $500,000 in 2014.
