Meteor Shower Taking Place Tonight

The Perseid meteor shower of 2011 is set to take place Friday night before dawn, reports ABC News. 

The meteor shower is a result of the Earth passing through the orbit of the Swift-Tuttle comet every year at this time. This event results in a beautiful sky of up to 50 or 60 shooting stars per hour as fragments from the comet enter the earth’s atmosphere and burn up.
 

“The best time to look is during the hours before dawn especially on Saturday morning, August 13^th,” writes astronomer Tony Phillips on NASA’s website. “The full Moon will be relatively low, and the meteor rate should be peaking at that time.”
