OnStar to Track Teens With 'Family Link' Program

Monday, 01 August 2011 04:27 PM EDT

General Motors has developed a new way to keep track of teenagers through a new OnStar Unit that's still in production called ‘Family Link,’ reports Auto News.
The feature will allow users to pinpoint the exact location of their vehicle from a remote location. Subscribers can use the OnStar web site to locate their vehicle at any time.

OnStar is looking to have approximately 10,000 current U.S. subscribers to participate in the trial.

“What parent hasn’t asked their teenaged driver to call or send a text when they arrive somewhere, only to not hear from them?” Linda Marshall, OnStar President, said in a statement.

Additional features in the pilot test will include a notification system if the vehicle goes over a certain speed or leaves a certain location.
Testing will continue through late September, after which OnStar will evaluate feedback and decide if they want to launch the service publicly.
