Ohio’s gun laws are comparable to nearly half of the other American states and are designed to give law-abiding citizens the opportunity to bear arms after going through the appropriate application process and obtaining the proper permits.

In some instances, out-of-state visitors can carry firearms as well, although a significant amount of homework should be conducted before a person packs his or her bags for the Buckeye State.

To date, Ohio has concealed carry handgun reciprocity agreements with nearly half of the 50 American states. The list includes Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

For residents in these 23 states, the concealed carry laws in force in their home region are also in force in Ohio. As explained on the state Attorney General’s website, the concealed carry laws in force in Ohio mirror the laws enacted in the 23 states named to the list.

Despite the reciprocity agreements, the Ohio Attorney General’s office still urges residents in each of the mentioned states to check for any variances since some additional conditions still might apply.

In general terms, handgun owners do not need a permit to purchase a handgun and do not need to register a handgun. Additionally, the owner of a handgun does not need to obtain a license to own the firearm. But Ohio’s laws do state a permit is needed to carry a handgun.

Ohio’s gun laws further stipulate it is unlawful to sell a handgun to anyone under the age of 21, although there are a few caveats. For example, exceptions are made in cases of lawful hunting, sporting, and educational activities.
