What Is OCD?

Monday, 27 June 2011 04:33 PM EDT

OCD, short for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, is a mental illness that causes patients to have obsessive thoughts and repeat certain behaviors.

At times, we all have obsessive thoughts and perform repetitive behaviors, but for those suffering from OCD these thoughts and behaviors can have a major impact on their daily lives and often inhibit a normal lifestyle.

As is often the case, OCD patients are aware of their obsessive thoughts and compulsive behavior but they are unable to control it or explain why they act in such a manner.

Although once thought to be a rare disease, advancements in science have allowed doctors to conduct more thorough and accurate diagnostic tests. The number of Americans is now approaching 3 million, making it one of the most common neurological diseases in the world.

If you believe that you or someone you know may be suffering from OCD it is important to seek medical help. OCD is a treatable illness and patients, with proper medical attention, can go on to lead very normal lives.
