On June 9, a North Carolina man robbed a bank of $1. Richard James Verone, 59, reportedly walked into an RBC bank where he passed the teller a note claiming that he was armed and demanding one dollar.
Why would anyone risk going to jail for a dollar? Unemployed and ill, Verone wanted to be sent to prison so he could receive medical treatment for a growth on his chest and two ruptured disks.
“I’m sort of a logical person and that was my logic, what I came up with,” Verone said.
After handing the teller his message, Verone reportedly sat down and waited for the police to arrive. He was found to be unarmed.
Verone sought a three-year sentence for robbery, which he judged to be enough time to get the medical care he needs. However, he will face a larceny charge, which is unlikely to keep him behind bars for more than one year. He is scheduled to appear in court June 28.
