North Carolina Abortion Laws: Quotes From Heated Debate

By    |   Tuesday, 04 Aug 2015 09:16 PM

Feelings ran high in July 2013 as North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory signed into law Senate Bill 353, which began as a motorcycle safety bill before being amended to include multiple anti-abortion restrictions.

The measure — which critics said could close many of the state’s abortion clinics — prohibits telemed webcam abortions and sex-selective abortions while also banning “coverage of abortion in the state health insurance exchange,” according to RH Reality Check.

The new law also enhanced medical and safety standards for North Carolina’s abortion clinics and directed the state’s Department of Health and Human Services to write new safety and professional standards for these clinics, according to the North Carolina Republican Party.

Here are quotes from people on both sides of the legislation.

“It is a disgrace to North Carolina that legislators have again resorted to sneak attacks to move their anti-women’s health agenda forward. This is outrageous and not how the people’s business should be conducted.”
Melissa Reed, vice president of public affairs for Planned Parenthood Health Systems, according to a statement published by Think Progress after anti-abortion amendments were inserted into the motorcycle safety measure.

“Thank God for answered prayer! Thank God for guiding the North Carolina General Assembly to pass SB 353. Pray that God will grant wisdom to Governor Pat McCrory to pass SB 353, the Health and Safety Changes Act, into law.”
Sheri Miller, state director for Concerned Women for America of North Carolina, in released statement after legislators approved the proposal and sent it to McCrory

Urgent: How Do You Feel About Stronger Regulations on Abortion Clinics?

“I am pleased that this new legislation is focused on the health and safety of women in North Carolina. These higher standards will result in safer conditions for North Carolina women. This law does not further limit access and those who contend it does are more interested in politics than the health and safety of our citizens.”
Gov. Pat McCrory, after he signed SB 353

“Governor McCrory has blatantly and unapologetically gone back on his campaign promise not to support any restrictions on abortion in our state. He is sending a very public message that he can’t be trusted to stick to his word.”
Suzanne Buckley, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina, after McCrory signed the bill.

“It is incredibly disappointing that Governor McCrory has broken his campaign promise and signed an extreme law that will severely restrict abortion access and comprehensive health care for countless North Carolina women .Measures such as these, which can have a terribly detrimental impact on women’s access to much-needed health care, should not be rushed through the legislature with little opportunity for meaningful public input, as this one was.”
Sarah Preston, policy director of the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina, told RH Reality Check

“Despite the majority of Americans, and North Carolinians, wanting these common-sense measures, the Governor has been treated to angry refrains from a vocal minority. We are so pleased that he stood up for life and has enacted these vital life-saving measures.”
Mary Spaulding Balch, director of state legislation for National Right to Life, said in a statement after McCrory signed the bill
