As of July 1, 2015, the sale and distribution of Styrofoam packaging and containers have been banned in New York City.
New York City had thrown away 23,000 tons of polystyrene foam waste a year,
according to NBC New York. Because it couldn't be recycled, the city deemed Styrofoam products an environmental menace.
But the legislation came under fire from businesses, particularly dining establishments, for the cost increase that the switch to more earth friendly products would incur,
according to WPIX11.
