How Do State Laws Apply in Tourist Areas?

New Hampshire is one of the least-restrictive gun carry states in the country. What do New Hampshire gun laws say about visiting tourist destinations, though? When it comes to hiking the Appalachian Trail, visiting Hampton Beach, or going to an amusement park, it pays to contact the place you want to visit to iron out the details first.

According to the National Park Service, anyone who can legally own a firearm outside the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, or any national park, can possess a firearm inside the park. Since the Appalachian Trail wends through 14 states, it is incumbent upon the gun owner to know the laws for the state he or she is in at any given time.

Following New Hampshire law, it’s permissible to open carry rifles, shotguns, and handguns. If the firearm is a handgun and the owner wants to conceal carry, a permit is required. If you’re traveling from out of state, New Hampshire recognizes certain state permits if you are a resident of that state. They are Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

The state prohibits the carrying of firearms in courtrooms and courthouses while federal law prohibits them in federal buildings and near elementary schools. Private property owners, including stores or restaurants, can prohibit guns on their property. City and town parks and buildings cannot make their own laws regarding firearms and must follow state law due to New Hampshire being a preemptive state, meaning that municipalities within the state must yield to state law.
