New Hampshire Abortion Laws: Quotes From Heated Debate

By    |   Tuesday, 04 August 2015 06:02 PM EDT

New Hampshire abortion laws are limited. While many states have placed many regulations on abortion services and abortion providers, New Hampshire has narrowed the scope of restrictions. The state is still filled with debate on the subject.

Here are several quotes from the heated debate on new and current regulations on abortion in that state:

1. "This is a pro-educational/pro-choice bill. Education is key to make an informed decision. Elective surgery is not performed within a 24-hour notice and there is no reason why an abortion cannot have a 24-hour waiting period. This bill would allow plenty of time to study all options available, before making a life changing decision."
Rep. Lenette Peterson (R-Merrimack), arguing in a 2013 Judiciary Committee report that a waiting period would be a good idea for women considering abortions

2. “This requirement would impose ideologically driven obstacles to women seeking this medical service and is both impractical and burdensome and could lead to increased health risks for some patients. No woman facing this most personal and difficult decision has come to the point of seeking to terminate a pregnancy without significant thought, deliberation, and discussion with her family, friends, and healthcare professionals. This bill suggests that women do not think carefully about abortion and are unable to make responsible decision without government interference.”
Rep. Sylvia E. Gale (D-Hillsborough), arguing in  the same Judiciary Committee report that a waiting period would be a bad idea for women considering abortions

3. “How much indeed have we paid for their journey to hell that kills 4,000 children each day.” – State House Speaker Bill O’Brien (R-Mont Vernon), speaking at rally to oppose state funding for abortions

4.
“The fact that Planned Parenthood of Northern New England doesn’t participate in tissue donation programs in New Hampshire underscores that the calls for a state investigation and for defunding PPNNE health centers are all about political grandstanding, not facts.”
Jennifer Frizzell, Planned Parenthood vice president for public policy, to the New Hampshire Union Leader in reaction to controversy in the state over nationwide accusations of the organization participating in the selling of fetus tissue samples.

5. "In light of the seriousness of these disclosures, I have asked the New Hampshire attorney general to open an investigation to set all minds at ease that none of these potentially illegal activities have taken place in New Hampshire."
Rep. Frank Edelblut, (R-Wilton) to the New Hampshire Union Leader concerning controversy over Planned Parenthood and accused illegal activity by the organization.

6. “In New Hampshire we have very little abortion regulation or accountability. Our state is extremely susceptible to this type of unethical practice, if it isn't already going on in our communities. Further along in the unedited footage from the Center for Medical Progress, (Planned Parenthood Dr. Deborah) Nucatola discusses access to such "tissue" in New England. Even more unsettling is the fact that your tax dollars are going to support Planned Parenthood of Northern New England."
Bryan McCormack, Cornerstone Action executive director, voicing the group's concern on the possible sale of fetal tissue in the state, to the New Hampshire Union Leader
