According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, modern scientific research has shown mixed results on the effectiveness of valerian as a natural sleep supplement. Some people have also had the opposite of a desired result, ending up more anxious and jittery rather than calm and sleepy.

Side effects include dizziness and headaches. The National Institutes of Health reports the sleepiness effect of taking valerian may also linger into the next day. It could also cause gastrointestinal problems.

Another risk of taking valerian may include interaction with other drugs. Just like all plant based products, these natural sleep supplements work because they have real chemicals, which could interact or react negatively with other prescription medications. The University of Maryland Medical Clinic advises it could also increase the effect of other sedatives — like alcohol. It is best to check with a doctor before starting to take any sleep supplement — natural or not.
