Which Natural Health Supplements Do Doctors Recommend to Boost Your Energy?

Very few people are able to create the perfect balance of work, family, fitness and play and a good night's sleep is often on the chopping block when it comes to time management. Many people turn to natural health supplements to boost their energy and thanks to the field of alternative medicine and a booming natural health market, there are a variety of supplements that have become popular with consumers.

According to WebMD, energy supplement ingredients
fall into three categories, "stimulants, which rev up the metabolism; substances that affect metabolism — specifically how the cells derive energy from nutrients; and calories, which are the basic fuel our bodies use to run.

Here are five natural health supplements that are commonly recommended to boost energy:

1. Caffeine: Perhaps the most frequently consumed energy booster, caffeine can be ingested in a variety of ways. While coffee and tea are the most common, consumers can also find caffeine in gum, mints, Vitamin Waters, caffeine infused sunflower seeds, caffeine spiked instant oatmeal, "perky jerky" and of course in heavily caffeinated energy drinks. Herbs such as guarana, yerba mate and kola nut are also high in caffeine.

However, moderation is the key to caffeine consumption. According to Michigan State University, "if you are consuming more than 500 to 600 milligrams per day, which equals four to seven cups of coffee, you may be prone to health problems including insomnia, nervousness, nausea or gastrointestinal problems, elevated heartbeat, headaches, etc."

2. CoQ10: This natural antioxidant is synthesized in the body and is essential to the energy providing function of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in cells. According to CNCA Health, "While your body naturally produces CoQ10, tissue levels of this important enzyme peak at age 20 and decline with age, which is why CoQ10 supplementation may be beneficial."

This blue-green algae "superfood" is rich in protein, chlorophyll, iron, antioxidants, beta-carotene and Omega-3 essential fatty acids. According to Natural News, "It is very common for people consuming Spirulina to experience a jump in energy and vitality. The reason is simple: Spirulina is a powerhouse of nutrition."

4. Ginseng:
Ginseng root has long been used in Asian and American medicine as a natural health supplement for its reputed ability to boost the immune system, increase concentration, and improve mood. People report that Ginseng provides energy, prevents fatigue, and "stimulates physical and mental activity among people who are weak and tired," reports Medical News Today.

5. Magnesium: According to Dr. Mehmet Oz, "A chronic lack of magnesium in the body yields many consequences — including low energy levels. Symptoms of magnesium deficiency include fatigue, weakness, anxiety, and irritability."
