10 Most Famous Christian Athletes

By    |   Tuesday, 27 October 2015 04:57 PM EDT

When famous athletes conduct interviews after their various events, they often will thank God for allowing them to stay healthy or win at whatever they were playing.

Sometimes, what they're preaching might ring hollow, but there are also a number of athletes who are Christian and who completely believe in their faith.

Here are 10 of the most famous Christian athletes.

1. R.A. Dickey

The only knuckleball pitcher ever to win Major League Baseball's Cy Young Award, Dickey has talked about his past (how he was raped as a child and how he tried to commit suicide) and how surrendering to God saved him.

2. Clint Dempsey

One of the best American soccer players in the world, Dempsey said his faith is "what gives me confidence for the future. I know that through both good times and bad, He is faithful and will watch over me."

3. Gabby Douglas

After becoming the first African-American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the all-around gymnastics competition, Douglas said, "I give all the glory to God. It's kind of a win-win situation. The glory goes up to him and the blessings fall down on me."

4. Allyson Felix

The six-time track and field Olympic medalist said church was a huge part of her life as a child. "As I grew older, my faith became my own," Felix told Crosswalk.com. "I've definitely had low moments, where I've had to rely more on my faith and go to that place of knowing there's a bigger purpose for everything."

5. Josh Hamilton

He's struggled with drugs for much of his adult life, but the Texas Rangers outfielder continues to tout his faith as an inspiration for himself. "How am I here?" Hamilton wrote for ESPN in 2007. "I can only shrug and say, 'It's a God thing.' It's the only possible explanation."

The former Rutgers football player was paralyzed during a 2010 game, but he's since written a book called "Believe" that outlines his reasons for his faith.

7. Manny Pacquiao

In 2012, Pacquiao, one of the best boxers in the world, converted to Christianity. As the Guardian writes, "He once was an all-night hound dog, taking his pleasure where he pleased." However, he's famously changed his ways since his conversion.

8. Philip Rivers

The longtime San Diego Chargers quarterback speaks in front of youth groups and touts the idea of chastity until marriage.

9. Tim Tebow

Although there have been "Saturday Night Live" sketches that have made fun of his constant proselytizing, there's little doubt the National Football League quarterback believes what he's preaching. Tebow might be the famous Christian athlete in this country today.

10. Bubba Watson

The 2012 Masters champion used his belief in his faith to stop his on-course temper tantrums and his frustrations. "We all have setbacks but God doesn't give us more than we can handle," Watson told CBN.
