1. Turkey
Wild turkey hunting has two seasons, fall and spring. In the fall, open season starts at the beginning of September and runs through December. The wild turkey is not native to Montana, but unlike other invasive species this animal was intentionally introduced into the local ecosystem, according to the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department (FWP).

It’s mandated that turkey hunters purchase a separate bird and conservation license, as well as turkey tags. The bag limit for turkeys is one per hunt.

2. Antelope
Antelope season starts in mid-August and runs into early November. Antelope also have an archery season for one month between September and October, according to the FWP.

3. Black Bear
The black bear fall season goes from September to November but varies for each Montana state district. Hunters hoping to catch a black bear must apply for a separate bear hunting license and review its extensive corresponding regulations. For example, hunters must be tested to certify that they can distinguish between black bears and grizzly bears, the FWP said. They must show this certificate to purchase black bear tags.

4. Moose
Hunters may target moose in Montana from mid-September through the end of November. In the fall, moose migrate toward willow flats or mature coniferous forests, according to the FWP. Be warned however, moose can sometimes draw in its deadly predator, the mountain lion.
