Friday, 24 June 2011 12:48 PM EDT

After rapper Missy Elliot’s mysterious three-year hiatus from the music scene, she has finally come forth to reveal to PEOPLE Magazine that she has been undergoing treatment for Graves’ Disease, an autoimmune illness that affects the thyroid.

Elliot was diagnosed with Graves’ in 2008 after she noticed some loss of control of her motor skills. She has since been battling symptoms of dizzy spells, mood swings, hair loss, unstable heart rate, bulging eyes, and lump growths in her throat.

“You live with it the rest of your life,” the rapper-producer told PEOPLE.

Elliot is finally starting to see improvements in her health after undergoing radiation treatment combined with medication to jumpstart her thyroid.

Elliot will discuss her battle with Graves’ in detail on the upcoming VH1’s Behind the Music airing June 29th.
