What to do When You Miss a Flight

Tuesday, 05 October 2010 09:06 AM EDT

It’s really unfortunate if you miss a flight. You might not have gone through the experience of missing a flight and faced the task of figuring this out for yourself. Or, you might have faced this situation, but did not know what to do when you miss a flight. At some point, most  of us will miss a flight. This is when flight insurance comes into the picture.

The first thing to do when you miss a flight is approach “airline help.” Visit the reservation desk of your airline and explain your situation. It helps to remain calm and friendly, and of course, well informed. A quick look at the airline’s website or at the back leaf of your ticket may tell you what you are entitled to and give you an idea as to what you can discuss with the airline representative. Knowing that they are dealing with a knowledgeable and reasonable person may inspire them to go out of their way to help you out.

What help are you really entitled to? If the missed flight was a connecting flight and the situation was not your fault, then most often, the airlines will find you an alternative flight with little or no charge. Your frequent-flyer status may help here, and it is a good idea to be abreast of the privileges you enjoy with the airline. However, there may be times when you have to pay a “change fee.” Usually, this is the case when the airline is not at fault.

When the flight is missed due to a mishap on the part of the airline, and the only flight they can put you on is the next day, they might provide you the next available flight with another airline. Most airlines like to work with each other in a professionally friendly environment.

If your baggage has gone onto another flight without your notice, immediately contact the reservation desk. There is a chance the flight did not take off yet, even if boarding is closed. In that case, your bag and baggage would be offloaded. But, this is unusual. However, do make it a point to get clear instructions from the authorities as to how you can get your luggage back as soon as possible.

In the event you miss a flight, you can get help from the reservation desk, but make sure you have all the details of the itinerary they have for you so that you reach your destination as quickly and easily as possible.
