Deer

Deer hunters often spend days in the field in search of the perfect buck. Game and Fish Magazine offers advice for narrowing the search, asserting that the best place to hunt for deer in Michigan is the Western Upper Peninsula. The majority of deer bagged each year come from this region.

Another area deer hunters should focus on is the Upper Peninsula in general. This region has thick forests and is a very rural region. Deer are plentiful in these two regions.

Turkey

Michigan has a wild turkey population of about 200,000 birds, according to Game and Fish. Each year about 30,000 birds are harvested through hunting. Hunters should make sure to hit Gladwin County, if they are looking to bag a turkey without much effort. There is a vast amount of public land in the area ripe for hunting.

The Manistee National Forest also offers hunters a good chance of bringing home a bird, as the forest includes many rivers and creeks near which the birds roost. Overall, Michigan ranks in the top 10 states in the country for turkey hunting.

Waterfowl

State managed waterfowl areas are the best bet for waterfowl hunters in Michigan, according to Outdoor Hub. The publication recommends hunters check out the Lower Peninsula for the best waterfowl spots. These areas, also dubbed the seven waterfowl wonders, include Muskegon County Wastewater, Harsens Island, Pointe Mouille, Shiawassee River, Fish Point, Fennville Farm Unit and Nyanquing Point.

These areas operate by permit on a first-come, first-served basis and are considered areas of world-class hunting.
