Matt Damon Defends Teachers

Wednesday, 03 August 2011 04:10 PM EDT

Matt Damon was asked a question about teacher performance during a "Save Our Schools" march outside the White House and had a sharp answer for the reporter, MSNBC reports.

Michelle Fields, a reporter from Reason.TV, asked “The Bourne Identity” actor about teacher tenure. She began the question by stating that actors work hard in order to obtain a level of job security but continued to ask “why isn’t it like that for teachers?”

Damon, whose mother is a teacher, was quick to answer. "You think job security is what makes me want to work hard? I want to be an actor, and that's the thing. You take this MBA-style thinking . . . it's the problem with ed(ucation) policy right now . . . it's like saying a teacher is going to get lazy when they have tenure. A teacher wants to teach."

The question obviously struck a raw nerve with the actor whose quick and succinct response seemed to surprise many.
