When Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick enacted new gun laws in August, it completely overhauled the state’s legislation. The state already has some of the strictest gun measures in the nation; however, Patrick said the new regulations will aid in curbing gun violence and protect the community.

Among the state's sweeping changes were the creation of an online portal within the Executive Office of Public Safety, which allows for real-time background checks, stiffer penalties for weapon-based crimes, a tracking unit for the state police, and a requirement that Massachusetts join the National Instant Background Check System.

Residents had varied opinions about the new law and made their voices heard at a State House hearing before the Committee on Public Safety just before legislation was passed.

The bill “recognizes the critical intersection between gun violence, suicide prevention, mental health care, domestic violence and school safety,” said Attorney General Martha Coakley, according to The Washington Times.

In an opposing opinion, Jim Wallace, head of the Massachusetts Gun Owners Action League, said, “Gun violence must be stopped, but placing restrictions on lawful citizens is not the answer.”

The issue has also taken to Twitter with people taking both sides of the heated debate.
